The Dirty Hippie Jam Band Project tells the story of a gang of modern-day hippies as they follow their favorite band, Liquid Brick, around the country. It’s a free-spirited romantic comedy that brings a modern sense of humor to good, old-fashioned musical theater. With a 7-person cast and minimal set (the entire show takes place in parking lots), this show is small in scale but big in awesomeness.
The hippies (or “Brick-Heads”) love their rambling ways. With GATOR their unofficial leader, everything is chill and everyone is comfortable in their roles: HUCK is the neurotic, POPS is a dirty old man, HONEYDEW is a neo-flower child who views her body as public property and WHITE EVAN just wants to get backstage. Though sometimes harassed by security chief, MARISOL, the hippies are having another great summer following Liquid Brick. But when money gets tight out on the road, Huck writes to his uptight sister JULIE for a loan. Instead of just sending him some cash, she decides to join the hippies on their travels. Recently laid off from her sales job, Julie is looking for a chance to reclaim her pride and prove her worth. And what better challenge than to turn their foundering burrito cart into a profitable business?
But Julie didn’t count on the seductive power of this free-and-easy lifestyle and the camaraderie that goes with it. And she certainly didn’t count on Gator, who sees her as the embodiment of all that is wrong with the world. These two alpha-types butt heads on every topic, until they realize they’re crazy about each other.
